Everyday Life

The Holidays!

The holidays were a crazy but fun time. Dan and I went down to visit my family first for Christmas Eve. We were able to see the lights around the city and do our Christmas lights traditions. On Christmas Eve we hang out with the entire family and close friends! We eat our traditional homemade enchiladas, Spanish rice, beans, etc. After dinner the games begin!

We play the white elephant game, the potato in the bucket game and a couple of other games. White elephant is my favorite since it has been a tradition for our family for so many years and it is always fun to see the random gifts people bring.

Dan and I had to leave the party a bit early since we had to get up incredibly early to hear back east to surprise Dans mom and family for Christmas Day! We have been planning this for over a year and the only person who knew in his family was his sister. Dan hasn’t been home for Christmas in 7 years so this was going to be a big deal.

We woke up for the first flight of the day, took two flights (with a dog) to get there and we finally made it to Massachusetts! We order an Uber ride and change into our Santa costumes. We had the Uber driver (who was awesome by the way) park two houses down from his Aunts house. We grab out luggage and run up the street in the snow and in Santa costumes. We walk in the house and everyone kind of looks confused since Dan has the full Santa beard. Once his family saw me they finally realized what was going on!

This is the moment we had been planning for about year and it was so worth it! Everyone was incredibly surprised! We had tears, laughs, and hugs. It was fantastic. Here is a picture taken right after we arrived.

Dan and I were completely delirious at this point since we had been up since 2am Pacific time and had been traveling all day long but this was so worth it. His parents truly had no idea and it was so worth being tired from all of the travel.

The next day we checked into our AirBnB in Portland, Maine and went up to his sisters house about an hour north of Portland. We were so thankful we were able to hang out with his sister, brother-n-law, niece and their exchange student. It was such a blast! Cold but we had a lot of fun.

Dan and I also decided to check out Downtown Portland and South Portland! I think we both fell in love with the area.

On our way back to Massachusetts we stopped at Dans best friends parents house since his friends were also there. We had lunch with their family and it was so great to see everyone again since we haven’t seen their parents since Dan and I got married.

We made it back to Massachusetts for the last couple of days before we flew back to California. The entire New England area had a cold snap and it was freezing! Here are some pictures of the front yard.

Dan and I were also able to spend some time with his grandparents which was needed. Dans grandma has dementia so it is important for him to see her as much as possible.

All in all it was such a great visit with his friends and family as we cannot wait to go back!

Cheers! Happy New Year!
